One thing that you need to be aware of is that elderly abuse does happen, and perhaps even happens more often than you think it does. This is why it is so important to educate yourself of the signs of this abuse. This will protect you on two fronts. If it is discovered that you are allowing abuse in your nursing home, you could be in big trouble such as lawsuits and criminal charges. In addition, it is very important to protect the safety and comfort of your residents.
Before you hire an employees you need to thoroughly vet them to make sure that they are safe and controlled. If there is any concern about abuse you need to take immediate action.
2. You Must Protect Your Employees
Elderly abuse happens often, but so does abuse of your employees. As a person becomes older, especially if they have dementia, they can experience personality changes. These changes can cause them to become paranoid, and even violent. It is almost like they reverting back to toddlerhood, but the problem is that they don't have a little body that can easily be controlled. Instead, they have an adult body and they may not understand what they are doing and hurt the residents when they become upset. Your employees need to feel safe, for this reason, you need to make sure that there provisions in place if the situation becomes dangerous.
3. The Home Needs 24 Hour Care
Lastly, know that the nursing home will need 24 hour care. This means that the home will need employees on holidays, through the weekend, and in the night. The great thing about this is that your business is always going, which makes it a stable and lucrative business. But it will require that you are realistic about the amount of work it will be and perhaps share the workload with another qualified individual.
